Rosacea

Rosacea is often referred to as adult acne, but it encompasses much more than pimples. Rosacea is an inflammatory disorder affecting mainly the central face. Redness, flushing, spider vessels and superficial papules are the classic signs of this disorder. Usually the cheeks, nose and chin will have a rosy hue, sometimes the entire face looks ruddy. People with rosacea tend to flush very easily, increasing their baseline redness, and sometimes will have a stinging or burning sensation during episodes of flushing. It is traditionally treated with topical and oral antibiotics but up to half of patients with this disorder do not respond to these measures.

The true cause of rosacea remains elusive but we do know that it has 1) a vascular componet and 2) an acneiform componet. Successful treatment of rosacea is aimed at both problems. Rosacea is famously stubborn and difficult to treat, but with the newest laser technology it can be successfully controlled, improved and even eliminated.

Laser treatment involves first targeting the visible vessels individually and then targeting the microscopic vasculature generally. Sealing microscopic vessels helps eliminate the general ruddiness and flushing problems of rosacea. Treatments take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Usually a series of treatments of two or more (depending on the severity of the rosacea) provides the greatest degree of improvement. There is no down time after treatments and it is usually pain free.
